This summer, visit Longwood Garden’s Nightscape in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. It is held Wednesday through Saturday night, and it sure to please all of your senses. The gardens provide a pleasant olfactory experience daily, but at night, psychedelic lights and soothing music make for the perfect date night.
Joe and I went this week, and we enjoyed every minute of our date night. The beer garden featured delicious Victory Ale and my type of hipster food (hibiscus blackberry baked ice cream and a black bean quinoa burger. ‘nough said).
Inside the cafe, there was the cafeteria I wish I had in high school and college. We shared a lunch tray and bought red bliss potatoes, orrechiette pasta with artichokes in a bechamel sauce, vegetarian chili, and quinoa with mangos, peppers, and onions. For dessert, we shared apple crisp with salted caramel ice cream. I know, I know, sounds like a lot, but everything looked so tasty.
We had such a good time in the beer garden, we almost forgot it was not the main attraction. We grabbed a beer for the road and headed down the stairs to the waiting attractions. We strolled through an indoor observatory. This is how I imagine Oprah’s greenhouses to look-nothing short of elegant and extravagant.
Surrounding the Nightscape attractions indoors were some of the gardens that give Longwood its great reputation. If I were to try to recreate Eden in my backyard, it would probably look like this place. Trickling fountains and chirping crickets gave the gardens a paradise feel.
Back outside, we followed the music to trails with dancing lights that coaxed us down the pathways to awaiting attractions. They included the tree house of my dreams.
A Longwood Gardens date may not seem like the ideal time for some guys, but Joe genuinely enjoyed himself, as well as the many beautiful couples we spoke to along the way. The beer helped, but the lights and sounds make for a mesmerizing experience that can easily stand out on its own. Nightscape runs through Halloween.
