It’s 9pm, and I’m writing this post with a glass of super Tuscan in hand, legs strewn across my chaise. My new journal is arms-length away, and a Melissa McCarthy movie is on the TV. I am chilling.
This is something that’s tough for me. Even on vacation, I tend to go, go, go. I’ve also grown accustomed to working on Saturdays, but that’s recently changed. Its a rare Saturday when I get to sleep until 9, but after champagne toasts at a wedding, my body obviously needed a little something extra. I’m also typically never the only human home. I had a hundred obligations, but instead of bringing myself to do any of them, I just took my Tonya home.
And it was the best decision ever. I cleaned and rearranged my house, walked through the woods with my pigs, and I went to the gym. I spent entirely too much time trip shopping in Target, and now I am at the wind down point.
This relaxation and reflection was necessary, and from now on I’m going to implement self-care Saturdays. The only thing missing from today is some comfort food, maybe a pint of salted caramel ice cream? Peppermint hot chocolate?
Self-care should be a top priority when you suffer from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, or just an overwhelming amount of stress-like me. You cannot be an effective employee, wife, mother if you aren’t taking the time to check-in with yourself and your needs. You may not realize it, but spend an afternoon doing exactly what you need to simultaneously unwind and recharge, and you will end up feeling more motivated, attentive and responsive to those who need you.
Tips for self-soothing and self-care:
- Hug yourself! It may sound silly, but you’d be surprised at the power of your own touch
- If you’re too embarrassed to wrap your arms around yourself, apply lotion to your body
- Take a hot bath
- Get in the attitude of gratitude. Make a list of things for which you are grateful
- Bake something yummy
- Read a good book
- Reflect on your week in a journal
- Workout-not for the sake of burning calories or transforming yourself, but simply because it boosts endorphins and is good for your body.
- Get out into nature
I will take it a step further, devoting Saturdays to a good face mask or facial and a deep conditioning hair treatment.
