What Makes Me Happy

These cute faces-my cousins. It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you’re around children. They don’t sweat the small stuff. With the exception of some recent blood loss in Target (kids and scooters don’t mix), they’re okay in my book. They’re down for anything I want to do, as long as sushi is not involved.

My little family. My animals all have their own personalities, and even my new addition, my rescue Bailey. They say animals take on their owners’ personalities, and I’m afraid to find out who takes after who. I’ll gladly claim the good qualities.

Too much to drink?

I see where she gets this…

She couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t in the boat, so she jumped in to save me…

Bailey has a heart of gold, though he’s a pain.

My friends. They are my sources of light and encouragement. They are fellow foodies, workaholics, and health nuts. These vibrant beings are my biggest fans when I need them to be, and simultaneously my critics when I need that, too. They are all too intelligent for their own good, and though they are all different, they each bring out the best in me in a different way. (Except Amaira. Her Pinterest posts of sweets always put me in a bad way). My friends get me.

I’ve been friends with Christina since we were roommates freshman year of college. The sexy and cerebral pharmacist recently made the bold decision to quit her job and become a health coach. I couldn’t be more proud.

I met Saida when she and I were paired up for a project in a magazine writing class, and I’m glad I looked past her resting b**** face. See that infectious smile below? She won me over. Armed with a David Sedaris book and a latte, Saida is always up for an adventure. Whether it’s strolling Champs-Élysées or taking a fashion risk, she’s down.

My favorite Saint Thomian, Saida

Amaira and I have been slinging insults since our days interning for the Senate. This diehard New Yorker is a mix of the Devil Wears Prada and Winnie the Pooh. She always helps me to bring out my inner fashionista, and if she weren’t in finance, she’d be my personal stylist and therapist.

Amaira giving us all the sass

Monica has a bubbly, sweet personality that can’t be matched. Don’t mess with her, though, she’s skilled in Jiu Jitsu, and she won’t take any mess. When she’s not tearing it up in a gee, she’s getting glammed up for a pageant. Or studying torts for law school. Who said you can’t have beauty and brains?

She totally earned the Miss Congeniality award

Last but not least, Brenda is the only friend who lives close to me. She and I grew up together, but lost touch after high school when she moved to Florida. Now I have a local ride or die-for kid’s birthday parties, or dreaded mall trips. That’s if she’s not busy playing Cat Woman at Comic Con.

Don’t be fooled by all the hotness. Brenda knows the difference between DC and Marvel Comics.

My natural family. Family politics aside, I’m glad to have a family that gets together often for more than just weddings and funerals-family game nights, bowling, barbecues, and even horseback riding. We do it all.
